Mid-morning, Marco called to update me. “I just got off the phone with Frank’s secretary and she confirmed that she had indeed made the reservation at the fishing lodge. She said it was a last-minute trip.”

“Is that normal?”

“She seemed to think so. And Eileen Vesco couldn’t think of anyone else Frank might have gone fishing with. She said all he told her was that he wanted to get away from it all. She said it wouldn’t have been unusual for him to go alone.”

“I sure didn’t get that feeling from Frank’s friend John.”

“I didn’t either. Eileen did express surprise that I was still investigating. She said she thought it was a waste of time. I told her Frank hadn’t been to the fishing lodge, and she said there was another place he liked to go, kind of off the grid. She said it was in the same vicinity as the lodge but was just a cabin near a lake.”

“And she had no way of getting a hold of her husband?”

“She said she texted him after we’d been there and got a text back saying that he was doing fine. And that was apparently all she needed to know.”

“Marco, why is Eileen the only person getting messages from Frank?”

“I don’t know, but as long as Eileen is fine with his absence, there’s nothing we can do. We don’t have any way of knowing where he is and there’s no trail to follow. We’re just going to have to wait until Saturday and see if Frank returns. His sister is supposed to let me know.”

“Okay, but I don’t have a good feeling about it.”

“Let’s hope you’re wrong.”
